Tri-Centre Minor Hockey Organization FAQ

Welcome to the FAQ section for the Tri-Centre Minor Hockey Organization. Here, we address key questions about the upcoming 2025-26 season and the new Representative Hockey Programming pilot initiated by the Western Ontario Athletic Association (WOAA).

General Information

What is the Tri-Centre Minor Hockey Organization?

  • The Tri-Centre Minor Hockey Organization is a collaborative effort between Shallow Lake Minor Hockey, Bruce Peninsula Minor Hockey, and Owen Sound Minor Hockey. This initiative is part of the WOAA’s pilot program aimed at forming “Partner Zones” to develop A-level Representative Teams for more competitive play in our local region.

What is the goal of this pilot project?

  • The pilot program aims to enhance hockey development by creating stronger, more competitive teams through the collaboration of multiple associations. This approach ensures every player has a pathway to participate and grow, whether at the A, B, or Local League level.

What communities are included in each Zone?

  • The WOAA pilot program divides associations into six zones. The Tri-Centre Minor Hockey Organization forms Zone 1 - Tri-Centre Jr. Attack, which includes:

    • Owen Sound Minor Hockey

    • Shallow Lake Minor Hockey

    • Bruce Peninsula Minor Hockey

  • The other zones are as follows:

  • Zone 2 - Bruce Grey Bulls: Arran-Elderslie, Saugeen Shores, TCDMHA (Chatsworth)

  • Zone 3 - Midwest 49ers: Saugeen Valley, South Bruce, Walkerton

  • Zone 4 - West Coast Whitecaps: Huron Bruce, Kincardine, Wingham

  • Zone 5 - Southwest Admirals: Blyth-Brussels, Goderich, Mid-Huron, Mitchell, Zurich

  • Zone 6 - Southeast Surge: Central Perth, Listowel, Mt. Forest, Drayton, Minto, Howick, Wallace

This structure was assembled by the W.O.A.A to ensure competitive hockey opportunities across the region while fostering collaboration among neighboring associations.

Teams and Tryouts

What teams will be offered?

  • For the 2025-26 season, the Tri-Centre Minor Hockey Organization plans to offer:

    • One A-level Representative Team for each age group (U10 to U18).

    • Double-cohort B-level Representative Teams for U11, U13, U15, and U18.

When will tryouts take place?

  • Tryouts for A-level hockey will occur in early May 2025, after AAA and AA tryouts are complete.

  • Tryouts for the B-level team will take place after tryouts for the A-level team are finished in the spring of 2025.

How many tryouts are required?

  • A minimum of three tryouts will be held for each team, and all players must attend at least one tryout to be considered.

  • The Team tryout process may include a Home and Away exhibition game against the Collingwood Blues to finalize the roster..

  • As usual, there will be a nominal fee required to register and participate in our Zone tryouts.

What if my child doesn’t make an A or B team?

  • Players who do not secure a spot on an A or B team can prepare for Local League programming. This ensures competitive and developmental opportunities for players of all skill levels.

Ice Time Allocation

What will icetime for practices and games look like?

  • Ice time will be utilized to ensure Teams can expect an average of three ice times per week, including one home game and two practices.

Fees and Equipment

What will the registration fees include?

  • Registration fees for A-level teams are expected to range between $1,200 and $1,800. These fees cover ice time, personalized jerseys, and socks for selected players.

    • These registration fees will also replace the typical ice time “Rep Fees” previously managed by individual team managers in some local associations.

Will additional costs apply?

  • Optional items like team swag (clothing, bags, water bottles, etc.) and tournament participation will incur additional costs as per the individual teams discretion.

    • Fundraising initiatives will always be encouraged to help offset expenses.

Player Movement and Open Borders

What does “open borders” mean with respect to the Zone Participation?

  • Starting in 2025-26, the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) has lifted residency restrictions for Representative hockey at U10 and above. Players are free to try out for teams in any zone or association if willing to travel.

What impact does this have on Local League hockey?

  • The Local League hockey program will continue to be managed by individual associations.

  • Each association remains focused on maintaining and growing local recreational hockey, providing the best programming possible.

Coaching

How are coaches selected?

  • A coaching committee with one representative from each association (3 in Total) will oversee the interview and selection process.

  • Non-parent coaches are encouraged to apply to provide the best possible development opportunities for players.

  • Coaching applications will be accepted until January 26th, at which time the selection process will begin.

When will coaches be announced?

  • Coaching selections will begin January 2025, with announcements expected by February 15, 2025.

Additional Questions

Will there be fundraising opportunities?

  • Yes! Team and individual fundraising will be encouraged to help families manage costs. Guidelines for fundraising will be shared closer to the season start.
